What are Adaptive Headlights?

Adaptive headlights are far more advanced than the low beam/high beam headlights that are on most cars in the United States. Adaptive headlights, which are also called smart headlights or matrix headlights, use onboard cameras, micro-mirrors, lasers and special software to adjust the headlight’s beam. This allows for a brighter and more focused light pattern; some have a curve-adaptive function which aims the beam in the direction the car is turning. Information is collected about the driving environment and it’s used to control individual LEDs in the headlight. The continuous evaluation of the information collected and control of the LEDs, avoids blinding oncoming drivers or pedestrians.

In February of 2022, the NHTSA (National Highway Transportation Safety Administration) approved the use of adaptive beam headlights in the United States, which has been the standard around the world for decades. The lengthy process started in 2013 when Toyota petitioned the agency to allow adaptive beam headlights. Some insurance companies like Nationwide and Progressive offer adaptive headlight discounts because of the increased night driving safety they provide.
