Dealership F&I Basics

The F&I (Finance and Insurance) office at a dealership is so much more than the name implies. It is one of the most important departments for car dealers because it’s where multiple sources of profit can be made during the sales process. It is necessary for every customer to be subjected to the F&I office because it is where all of the paperwork is signed.

Besides arranging for financing and selling associated insurance like GAP (Guaranteed Asset Protection), credit life and credit disability, the F&I salesperson is also going to try to sell so much more. They offer undercoating, paint protection, fabric protection, glass VIN code etching, aftermarket infotainment systems, custom wheels, aftermarket accessories, and extended warranties/service contracts. This isn’t an inclusive list, and it is typically a time-consuming and frustrating experience.

Many unscrupulous dealerships will add on some of these items before you even make it to the F&I office. Another sales tactic, if you are getting a loan through them (which I highly recommend you don’t), is getting your loan pre-approved for more than you need so they can offer to add the items they are trying to sell you to your loan.

There is a proven strategy to circumvent the non-sense of the F&I office that will save you valuable time, money, and frustration. We can help. Knowledge is power. Contact us before stepping one foot inside a dealership.
